A Pair of Gray Jays

A pair of Gray Jays in the snow on Ontario ??FeederWatch Cam? today. Gray Jays are hardy little birds that breed in late winter (i.e., now!), incubating their eggs in temperatures that might fall below -20 degrees F! Scientists aren't quite sure why this is the case, or why Gray Jays don't attempt to raise a second brood in the summer.

Honua hatches on Nest 3

The second chick on Albatross Cam has hatched! Baby Honua on Nest 3 hatched in the morning on January 30. Here's a clip of the first glimpse of Honua on cam, with mom Moana. The parents on the nest are Moana (female) and Manawanui (male). Welcome to the world, Honua!

Kialoa Hatches!

The first chick of the season completed hatching this morning! Our volunteer camera operators caught a glimpse of the downy chick under its dad, Ikaika. The chick was named Kialoa by a Hawaiian kumu. The name means “long, light / swift canoe”, after the amazing long-distance voyaging Hawaiian canoes that so aptly mirror the long-distance foraging flights of these graceful seabirds.
